SUMMARY:International Debate: Navigating the Path to Sustainable Energy
DESCRIPTION:The EU24 - Engage4thePlanet project contributes to more diversi
ty in political participation on environment and climate change issues.\nT
his event aims to stimulate insightful discussions on climate change issue
s and provide a platform for diverse voices\, especially underrepresented
ones\, to contribute their perspectives. To reach a sustainable future a tr
ansition to green energy is required. We will focus on ENERGY as one of im
portant aspect when aiming to tackle climate crisis.\nGroningen\, Drenthe
was chosen specifically to host the debate on ENERGY\nSouthern Groningen a
nd Drenthe have a history of underground energy resources\, heavily influe
ncing the landscape until this day. To reach a sustainable future a transi
tion to green energy is required.\nThe Groningen natural gas field has bee
n a topic of numerous discussions: the gas led to significant wealth but a
lso resulted in a crisis of gas-related earthquakes damaging homes and bui
ldings in the region. The impact on local communities is ongoing\, with a
substantial restoration project spanning the entire region\, permanently a
ltering the aesthetics of historic villages. The management of the gas-rel
ated earthquakes turned into a national political crisis\, eroding civilia
n faith in governmental competence.\nBesides the damage\, this crisis fuel
ed the debate on the energy transition and the role that the province of G
roningen is willing to play. Groningen has the potential to farm green ene
rgy like wind and solar energy. The geographical factors make this region
a promising green energy area. On the other hand the province might not wi
sh to be an area of energy farming again.\nWhile gas extraction in Groning
en ended in October 2023\, the Wadden Sea gas fields and off-shore energy
production by windmills are being considered as potential alternatives. Of
f-shore energy production has gained renewed relevance due to the conflict
between Russia and Ukraine. However\, the effects of gas mining and off-s
hore wind farms are debated due to potential ecosystem impacts on this uni
que UNESCO Wadden Sea area. Off-shore farming also comes with new challeng
es like energy transportation and energy storing.\nSouthern Drenthe is hom
e to the largest oil field in Western Europe. It marks the establishment o
f the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) in the oil village of Schoon
ebeek. For a long time\, it was seen as a great opportunity for locals\, a
nd NAM contributed to numerous facilities for the local community. However
\, due to the Groningen gas earthquakes\, there is now growing suspicion a
gainst NAM\, resulting in a strained relationship between the company and
 the villagers.\nThe Project EU24-Engage4theplanet is implementing gender-b
alanced blended exchange events between domestic and mobile union citizens
in the fields of climate justice\, climate change and sustainability - in
  4 European countries (Poland\, Germany\, Netherlands and France) over a p
eriod of 20 month.\nThe project aims to decrease the democratic participat
ion gap of young citizens\, citizens of diverse backgrounds\, mobile union
citizens in a gender balanced way by showing that their voices matter.\nT
opics include Mobility\, Food Production\, Energy and Climate Justice. We
are implementing an interactive debate format that works across language b
arriers. All events are connected by a poster competition that links visua
 l art with political action.Partners are EGEA Alumni\, Netherlands\; ALDA\
 , France\; Otwarty Plan\, Poland\; CRN Germany.\n \nThe goal of the event
is to:• To empower and amplify underrepresented voices: Join us in disc
ussing the critical issue of climate change and its impact on our planet.
We encourage young people\, citizens of different backgrounds and mobile u
nion citizens to voice their opinions and ideas as they play a crucial rol
e in shaping the future.\n• Green ENERGY – challenges and recommendati
ons: Immerse yourself in a high-profile debate on Navigating the Path to S
ustainable Energy. Together we will explore the challenges and propose sus
tainable recommendations for a greener and more sustainable future.\nYour
voice matters in the fight against climate change and in the pursuit of gr
een ENERGY solutions. Let’s come together on 14TH march 2024 because you
 r voice counts!\nRegister before 1st March: https://forms.gle/mGKBjavHAsv
